If you’re looking for a list of names, sorry to disappoint. This post is about how I decide who I want to receive our nominations.

My criteria are very simple. The only reason I’ve served as a party officer since 2004 is to elect Democrats, and I’m voting for the people who I think have the best chances of winning in November. Now, before you jump to conclusions and think that’s pretty political, calculating, and devoid of principle, then let me tell you how I make those assessments.

I’m looking for someone who is authentic. Voters eventually see through fakes. Some will vote for them anyway (refer to current US President). I prefer not to.

I’m looking for someone who can fire up our base by speaking articulately and with enthusiasm on core Democratic values and issues. And, I’m looking for someone who can do that in a way to appeal to at least a few crossover voters as well.

I’m looking for someone who is running on and has a passion for issues appropriate to the position they are seeking.  For example, if you’re running for County Commissioner talk about roads and bridges and don’t talk about federal income taxes.

I’m looking for someone who acts as if they really want to win, who has the fire in their belly and doesn’t act as if they are entitled to the nomination.

I’m looking for someone who is running for the right reasons – who really wants to serve the public.

I’m looking for someone who has proven they can attract donors and a team of volunteers. A lot of small donors means more to me than a handful of large donors.

I’m looking for a team player who will work with the party and support the other Democratic candidates on the ballot.

And finally, though we may not like to think about it, I’m looking for someone who, if things don’t go our way, will be as gracious a loser as they are a winner. That’s one of the truest signs of character there is.

Now, bear in mind there isn’t a single, perfect candidate who scores well on every single one of these criteria. Life is full of compromises and voting is no exception. So, good luck in making your choices. I hope this helps at least a bit.
